Time Up 1.1
One such bad app has fallen in our lap today. It’s called Time Up and we can’t recommend it. It’s been left out to rot since 2010, looks awful, and doesn’t even deliver on promise.
Ancient, iOS 4 design
Remember when the iPhone 4 came out with its sleek Retina display and cool glassy design? Well, it’s no longer a pinnacle in smartphone design, is all we can say. Times evolve, and so do smartphones. And so do the OSes that run on them, and so do apps. But not Time Up.
Ceona Inc. decided they wouldn’t update their timer app to keep up with the “times.” Kind of ironical, isn’t it. Time Up still looks and acts like an iOS 4 app, doesn’t even go full screen, and has a cumbersome set of navigation options.
Doesn’t work properly
You’d think an app that looks awful should at least deliver on its promise. But it doesn’t. While the Alarm function does work, the Timer utility doesn’t. At least not in a way that we can fully comprehend. Whatever settings we tried, we just couldn’t set a 15 minute interval on the thing. And for the Timer to even allow activation, you have to stop any recurring alarms. Why?
At least it’s free
Granted, Time Up doesn’t display any annoying ads or nag screens to rate the app on iTunes or make in-app purchases. It’s offered on an “as is” basis, and that’s something worth mentioning here too. These days, every developer will try to monetize their app one way or another. Not that it’s a bad thing (people have to make a living), but it’s certainly nice to see something offered as 100% free of charge, no obligations, no anything. Too bad Time Up is useless, though.

Bottom Line
Design / UI1
Very poor design and it’s been left unattended since 2010, which makes it look even worse. |
Function2
Some features don’t work properly, and the bad design makes it even harder to use. |
Security4
It’s very unreliable and shouldn’t be used in case you’re waking up early for a job interview, school, or whatever. |
Battery8
Normal consumption levels. |
Price10
As noted above, apps’ free of charge with no ads or IAPs. Hats off to that. |
Compatibility5
Has a low firmware requirement (iOS 4) but really isn’t optimized for anything that came out after 2010. |
No reason to get this one at all. Look elsewhere.
