Numerical 1.2.1

A calculator with history, cool animations, and no equal
Developer Andrew J Clark and designer Alex Vanderzon combined their forces to create a neat calculator app for iOS devices that could well replace Apple’s own. It’s better looking, it has a history function, uses swipe gestures for Undo and Redo, and doesn’t require hitting the equal button.

No equal, both literally and in design

In fact, Numerical doesn’t even have an equal button. And it also doesn’t have a match as far as the UI is concerned. The interface is a warm gradient that flows from red to purple while the keys are flat and minimalistic. Everything just flows, and it even has some neat animations here and there.

Every bit of information you need about how to use it is displayed in the upper side of the screen, where the results from your calculations will also be displayed.

Swipe left and right

Unlike other calculator apps, Numerical uses swipe gestures for some functions. Don’t worry, the gestures are not for actual calculations. They’re for extra features. For instance, to summon the history page, simply swipe left (the dialog says the history page is to the right, but that means you need to swipe left). Undo and redo works similarly. Just swipe left and right on the main display area above.

N/A keys, price

Another neat trick that UX expert Alex Vanderzon implemented is the N/A (not available) system for keys whose actions are not allowed in certain situations. For instance, the percentage key grays out when you’re dealing with exponents / powers.

Numerical used to be free at some point but the developers decided to slap a price tag on it once more. It’s not cheap for the few things it does, but it’s also not too expensive. The thing is a gem and deserves to be priced accordingly.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • superb interface
  • great user experience
  • history of calculations
  • swipe gesture actions
  • N/A keys when actions are not allowed

misses

  • would be nice to have different color themes
  • no scientific calculator (considering the $2.99 price tag)
Bottom Line
Design / UI10

Numerical is excellence in design and UX (user experience). Hats off to Alex Vanderzon for that.

Function9

Although it’s not a scientific calculator, it’s quite alright for most people. And the way it works is just brilliant!

Security10

Doesn’t pose any security issues for the user.

Battery9

Numerical is very easy on the battery.

Price8

Sells for $2.99 (at the moment) which is probably the right price for all the work that went into creating the app.

Compatibility8

Sadly there’s no iPad version and the minimum firmware requirement is iOS 7.
