MX Video Player 4.0
Thick UIwith big useless buttons
MX Video player looks as bad as it does video playback. Its large preview frames waste too much screen space, it constantly displays ads, it constantly keeps a “click here” banner on its screen to remove the ads, and it pops up a message once every 2 minutes to let you know that you can email the developer with requests.
The playback controls are awfully big and poorly designed, and there are various UI elements that simply don’t work or are extremely counter intuitive, such as the mute button (which appears muted when it’s actually switched to ON), and the aperture icon at the top right which only God knows what it’s there for.
Nothing works as expected
If you’re looking for a player to watch movies on your iPhone, MX Video Player-Play isn’t it. Everything in it is broken, the buttons work only when they feel like it, some actions aren’t even functional, and it doesn’t understand too many formats either.
Nothing works as you’d expect, and every time you switch to a new video, it displays a full-screen ad that you’ll most certainly tap by accident. We understand that the developers need to get paid somehow, but this is not the way to go. It would be more fair just to slap a $0.99 / €0.89 price tag on the thing.
The player stutters and lags, doesn’t respond to touch, and some things simply don’t work. And it constantly tells the user to email the developer with suggestions. We have one for them: fix your app or just pull MX Player out of the App Store. There are too many things wrong with it to bother mentioning.
We didn’t even install it on iPad, to be perfectly frank. Just go with VLC or whatever. Really, don’t get this one.

Bottom Line
Design / UI3
Ugly. Buttons and icons are unnecessarily big and unresponsive. Same goes for video previews. You’ll be looking at ads more than you’ll be watching video. |
Function2
Stutters and lags, doesn’t respond to touch, and some things simply don’t work |
Security3
Asks access to your camera roll the second you launch it. By what we’ve seen so far, you shouldn’t let it anywhere near your photos and videos. |
Battery7
Since it’s not very well optimized, you can expect some power consumption, but admittedly not too much. Don’t forget the ads (infamous power drainers). |
Price5
In just 10 minutes of testing we’ve accidentally tapped on full-screen ads three times. Not a product that can be advertised as free. |
Compatibility2
Unibera Softwares says it has optimized MX Video Player for iOS 7. We say that’s a big fat lie. Optimized software actually responds to user input. |
And that's only because we need to respect our rating system
