Foursquare 8.3
It's not a social network per se. It's more of a travel app than anything. Basically it serves up POIs, but also lets you get in touch with others and see what they think about all kinds of different places.
A messy UI
Foursquare is cluttered. Thats said, it’s preferable to look crowded rather than to look empty and devoid of information. You want as much intel as possible when you’re hunting for places to eat, party, relax, even work outdoors, and Foursquare is always ready to help with an endless selection of location-based recommendations complete with user-reviews and a social network that lets you connect with others and compare tastes, or clothing.
Despite being full of sections and subsections, it does start with a handy guide that gets you acquainted with the service.
Customized search
You basically tell the app what you’re interested in - movies, drinks with friends, music clubs, pool parties, Chinese food etc. - and Foursquare looks around you and gives you accurate information about the nearest places that you can visit in accordance with what you’re in the mood for.
People will comment on the amenities and even flag those places that don’t provide proper service. The reviews are far more accurate than doing a regular Google search, so you can count on Foursquare to tell the truth more often than not.
Once you tell Foursquare the things you’re interested in, every search will be tailored to your tastes, your past ratings, and picks from friends and experts. You can have very specific tastes, like “hipster restaurants, “or outdoor seating” or whatever.
The fact that the app allows you to put together lists is pretty cool, since that means you can better organize and share places that you find awesome.
iOS 8 users have also received some cool features. For instance, you can perform several actions, such as saving, liking or following straight from the notifications you get from Foursquare. Furthermore, the app has received 1Password support, everyone’s new favorite password manager, which means that you can save some time by using it to fill in your credentials.
You can leave tips and share your discoveries, earn expertise by paying it forward, and see what’s good to order when you’re visiting a place for the first time. Like on Twitter, you can follow people and they can follow you back.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
Even after being redesigned, Foursquare still looks like a bit of a mess. A very informal mess, that is. |
Function9
You have to hand it to Foursquare for creating such a compelling search engine and discovery service using nothing but information from the users. And since it’s people like me and you who make up most of the intel on Foursquare, you’ll know that the service doesn’t lie. |
Security7
Foursquare goes deep into your social life and prompts you to speak up about places you like or you don’t like. It’s not a bad thing, but you need to be careful with what you say sometimes. |
Battery5
Like any app that uses location services in the background, Foursquare will eat through your battery like termites through rotten wood. |
Price10
Free with no ads or in-app purchases. Well, technically Foursquare is a huge chunk of ads in and of itself, but that’s really the core functionality of the service. |
Compatibility7
Requires iOS 7 and strangely still doesn’t have an iPad version. |
Leads you to places you’ll love.
