Alarm Clock - One Touch 1.3

Night stand clock with a simple design, requires in-app purchases to really work well
Alarm clock apps are either too simple, or too complicated. It’s rare that you find one with just enough features to wake you up and get to work on time without any annoying sounds or extra things that might conflict with the main functionality.

Simple, intuitive design

Alarm Clock - One Touch has a simple, elegant clock face themed black & white, with a green alarm hand that you can move manually to set your alarm time. That’s right. You don’t need to scroll through a reel to set your hours and minutes and finally hit okay. This one just lets you set it manually, like grandma’s old clock.

It rings with a standard night stand alarm clock sound (you know, the ones that had radios built in them), and you can gather more sounds via in-app purchase. Buying the pro version also lets you select your own music for the alarm, as well as get a snooze function, detailed alarm time, and the ability to set the alarm volume.

Requires in-app purchases

The problem with most alarm clock apps that have in-app purchases is that you’re somewhat compelled to buy the extras. For example, snoozing is a pretty important aspect of most people’s waking up process. Same goes for the exact alarm time thing. While it’s nice to have the ability to set the alarm manually by just moving the alarm hand with your finger on the screen, it’s also pretty imperative to know the exact time your alarm is going to ring. 10 minutes can make a heck of a difference.

No settings, no ads

What we can appreciate at this app is that it doesn’t nag the user with ads or constant prompts to buy the full version. The option to upgrade is there behind the three-dotted button, but it’s your choice if you want to see that screen or not. The developers will throw in an occasional “rate-us” nag screen, but that’s fair. After all, they aren’t doing a public service.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • great design
  • ability to set the alarm by moving the alarm clock hand with your finger
  • no extras that don’t need to be there (i.e. weather, utilities, etc.)

misses

  • requires in-app purchases for basic functions
  • too expensive for such a simple app
  • requires to be on constantly for reliable functionality
Bottom Line
Design / UI0

Very well designed and very simplistic. The UI is intuitive and responsive.

Function0

Unfortunately, while the alarm clock does work, it needs the app to be open (or the phone unmuted).

Security0

It can be easy to make a mistake and set the app so that it doesn’t ring at the time you wanted it to ring. This can be risky if you’re on a deadline, meeting someone, etc.

Battery0

Needs to stay on permanently (prefferably in a dock) for the full features to work as expected.

Price0

The full version is kind of expensive for such a simple app: $2.99 / €2.99. Also, you’re pretty much compelled to buy it.

Compatibility0

Requires only iOS 4.3 and is optimized for most iDevices, but doesn’t have an iPad version.

Editor's Review
POOR

Without a snooze function, it’s useless for many people.
