The feature might arrive together with Android 7.0 Nougat

In previous builds of Android Nougat Developer Preview, Google seemed to have paid more attention to the Camera and introduced manual exposure control. However, the feature disappeared in following Developer Previews, only to appear in an upcoming version of the camera app.

Google might implement manual exposure control in its Google Camera app, which isn't exactly a ground-breaking feature since most third-party applications and even manufacturer skins have it by default.

The feature has been spotted by Android Police, and presumably, it will be introduced together with the public release of Nougat. The exposure slider will be present in the Google Camera and will no longer be activated with a toggle.

Users will need to tap the screen to activate auto-focus on the object that they wish to capture, and the exposure slider will automatically appear on the screen. The slider will allow users to adjust the marker up or down, compared to the -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 steps in previous Android Nougat Developer Previews.

Rumors from the past few days indicate that Google might release Android 7.0 Nougat this month, together with the two upcoming Nexus smartphones. The manual exposure control feature might be exclusive to Nougat 7.0, which means that Nexus handsets will also be using it.

In addition, Google might also introduce new grid options to the Camera app, including grid off option, 3×3, 4×4, the Golden Ratio, and square. The new grid options will be available on the viewfinder screen.
