Sony confirmed back in June that some of its Xperia smartphones would be eligible for the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update. Although an exact launch date has yet to be announced, we might be very close to its release.

According to XperiaBlog, a new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware (23.4.A.0.546) has just been certified for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 series, so if nothing wrong happens during testing, this firmware might be pushed to smartphones very soon.

The new firmware has been certified by PTCRB for the following Sony smartphones: Xperia Z2 (D6502, D6503), Xperia Z2 Tablet (SGP521), Xperia Z3 (D6653), Xperia Z3 Dual (D6633), Xperia Z3 Compact (D5803, D5833), and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact (SGP621, SGP641).

So, if you own one of the smartphones mentioned earlier, then you will soon be eligible for an Android 5.1.1 Lollipop upgrade.

This will be the last major update for these smartphones until Google releases Android M later this fall. For some of them, this will be the last major update until they reach end of life status, since they will be too old to receive Android M.

But Sony will have the last word on the matter, so we expect the Japanese company to announce its Android M upgrading plans soon after Google makes it available.
