Amazon goes to the low-end spectrum of the market

Do you remember how Amazon’s seemingly secret project that involved building a $50 / €45 tablet surfaced online not so long ago? Well, the retail giant has just made the tablet official, shortly after the rumor mill signaled its existence.

The tablet is called Amazon Fire, and as expected, it’s an entry-level model coming with a 7-inch IPS display boasting 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, a 1.3GHz quad-core chipset, and 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage to top it all. Unexpected but very welcome is the fact that we will find a microSD card slot on board the tablet, which helps expand storage to up to 128GB.

Amazon also throws in a 2MP main camera, plus a VGA front-facing one. As usual, the new Fire tablet comes equipped with Amazon’s forked version of Android, called Fire OS version 5 (or Bellini), so don’t expect to find any of Google’s own services on board. Yes, that means no Google Play Store access, but Amazon offers its own App Store as an alternative.

The tablet sells for $49.99 / €45 and Amazon has an interesting deal set up for its customers: you can choose to order a sick-pack of Amazon Fire tablets which will cost you $249 / €220, meaning you get the sixth for free.

If you’re interested, you should know that pre-orders for the device start on September 30.
