On Tuesday, mobile phone maker Sony announced the immediate availability of a new software update for its Xperia acro HD (IS12S) smartphones on the network of wireless carrier KDDI in Japan.

The company recommends users to connect their handsets to a PC and perform the OS upgrade this way, as certain charges could apply if they download it over the air.

However, the update will be available over the air as well, and users will receive a notification on the matter, the handset vendor announced.

The update will be made in two steps. The first involves installing firmware 6.0.D.0.275 on the device, while the second includes the installation of software 6.1.D.0.170 on the smartphone.

Sony did not offer specific info on how long it would take for it to upgrade all Xperia acro HD devices out there, but it shouldn’t take that long.
