Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system has continued its growth in the fourth quarter of the last year, but lost market share in key areas, the latest report from Kantar unveils.

Sales of Windows Phone-based smartphones went up in December when compared to November, but the overall growth in smartphone sales was higher than that, thus resulting in a loss of ground.

Even so, the platform did manage to gain some market share in countries such as Germany, the UK, Italy and Spain, though it lost some in France, USA, China and Australia, said report unveils.

As WMPoweruser notes, Nokia clearly helped Windows Phone in terms of sales, though it has yet to launch a new high-end device that would appeal to the masses, something that Lumia 1520 failed to do.

The long-rumored Lumia Icon appears to be this device, though it remains to be seen whether it will be launched outside Verizon’s network as well.
