Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system has started to gain some ground on the smartphone market, and is already selling better than BlackBerry and iPhone in several countries, it seems.

Frank X. Shaw, corporate vice president of Corporate Communications at Microsoft, notes in a recent blog post that the mobile OS has even managed to top 10 percent market share in some countries, a figure that looks encouraging.

Furthermore, he cites a recent IDC report according to which Windows Phone devices have started selling better than the BlackBerry smartphones in 26 markets worldwide, while also leaving Apple’s iPhone behind in seven countries.

Of course, Windows Phone is still lagging behind competition in many other countries, yet chances are that it will increase its market share with the help of new, more appealing devices.
