One day after unveiling the new Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, Microsoft has released the SDK development tools that will enable devs to create universal apps for the new platform.

Keep in mind that the Windows Phone 8.1 development tools are included with Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 (or later). These tools provide enhanced productivity and collaboration features, along with Shared Projects that allow developers to create an application that is perfectly tailored for the new Windows Phone 8.1 experience.

Even though there are no devices powered by Windows Phone 8.1 platform available on the market, developers will be able to develop their apps and games before the new operating system gets released for the general public.

Speaking of which, Microsoft has confirmed that it will release Windows Phone 8.1 update for compatible devices in late summer.

However, the first smartphones powered by the new operating system will be launched in May, June and July, which leaves devs at least one month to bring their creations on the new platform.

Developers who already have Visual Studio 2013 installed should make sure they also have Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 RC.

Those who don’t have Visual Studio 2013 yet can download and install Visual Studio Express for Windows, which includes Update 2 RC as well.
