One of the companies that have been long rumored to plan on releasing Windows Phone handsets is Sony, though it hasn’t confirmed any plans on the matter as of now.

According to some of the latest reports, however, the Japanese mobile phone maker might be set to release such a handset sometime in summer.

The info comes from The Verge’s Tom Warren, who said on Twitter that some Sony devices might be available in July and that they could feature the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 platform on top.

Said tweet also unveils that Windows Phone 8.1 might see two updates before the end of this year and that they might arrive in July and October, respectively.

No official confirmation on any of the above has been provided as of now, and it remains to be seen whether Sony is indeed ready to join Microsoft’s party once again.

The first handset in the Xperia lineup was launched with Windows Mobile loaded on top, but Sony hasn’t released anything else but Android smartphones for years now.

One of the main reasons for that is supposedly the fact that Windows Phone comes with deep Xbox integration, while the Japanese vendor would rather promote its own services, including the PlayStation Network.

However, should Microsoft and Sony reach an agreement and a Windows Phone handset be added to the Xperia lineup, specifics on the matter will arrive soon, so stay tuned to learn the news.
