The patent does not necessarily confirm the release of such a device

South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung might bring to the market a rather unusual smartphone in the not too distant future, at least this is what a recently granted patent suggests.

To be more precise, the USPTO has granted the company a patent for a device that features a screen with an aspect ratio of 21:9, but that is described as a mobile phone, as PhoneArena notes.

The aspect ratio is certainly unusual for handsets, though it is being used on some widescreen TVs, which raises a lot of question marks related to the purpose of the new Samsung device.

You can have a look at the sketch drawings that Samsung has attached to its patent filling, but don’t expect to find there further details on what the device will be all about.

Of course, the fact that Samsung has patented said device does not necessarily mean that the company will also make it commercially available.

According to PhoneArena, chances are that Samsung was only trying to protect its design in the event that it ever launched a handset packing a 21:9 display. However, since there is a chance for such a handset to arrive on the market, it remains to be seen when exactly that might happen.
