The two smartphones were launched too close to one another

LG Electronics is said to have managed to sell only 2 million LG G2 smartphones to date, a much lower amount than originally projected for 2013.

According to DigiTimes, the market performance of the device was affected by the release of Nexus 5, the latest Google phone out there, which packs similar hardware capabilities, but a much lower price tag.

The fact that LG G2 was launched too close to the release of Nexus 5 was the main issue, as the sales momentum of the flagship device was affected in a negative manner.

Other vendors out there saw lower-than-expected sales of their flagship devices as well, including HTC, which had a bit of a rough time keeping up with initial demand of HTC One, due to component supply issues.

For the next year, however, LG might go a different road. Recent reports suggested that it could be set to launch its 2014 flagship device, the LG G3, at the MWC show in Barcelona in February.
