Computer maker Hewlett-Packard is reportedly getting ready for the launch of a cheap 7-inch tablet PC that will arrive on shelves at Wal-Mart just in time for the back-to-school period.

The slate is expected to feature a price tag of $99 (€76), and is said to be manufactured by the China-based BYD with the aforementioned 7-inch touchscreen display and with a single-core Intel Medfield processor inside.

According to a recent article on DigiTimes, the availability of such a new device from HP (most probably running Android) would determine competitors to launch similar products.

However, it seems that market watchers believe that HP’s tablet PC won’t enjoy expanded availability, as it will be sold only through specific retail channels, which would impact its performance, despite the low price tag.

Furthermore, the inclusion of a single-core processor inside the device could make it less appealing when compared to quad-core products coming from other vendors.
