Internet giant Google appears set to provide the owners of Android-based smartphones with new facial recognition protection capabilities, a recently published patent from the company unveils.

Filed in June last year but published only now, the patent points at the possibility to set facial landmarks to increase the security of a device.

Although still taking advantage of the Face Unlock feature in Android, the patent would require for users to pull a series of faces in order to unlock their devices.

According to a recent article on bbc.co.uk, some of the requests that could be made include a frown, a tongue protrusion, an open-mouth smile, a forehead wrinkle, and an eyebrow movement.

The feature would include some additional security enhancements, through checking the user’s face from a captured video stream to verify whether the person indeed made the gesture.
