The handset was not rooted, all components were stock

Samsung Galaxy S III, last year’s Android-based flagship device from the South Korean handset vendor, proved a great device for many, though some unlucky users did experience issues with it.

One very unlucky user even saw its Verizon-branded Galaxy S III bursting into flames and exploding while plugged in and charging, as explained in this Reddit post.

The device had been charging for about one hour when this happened, and even caused the foam mattress pillow top it was sitting on to catch fire and burn, leaving a big hole in it. Apparently, some of the handset’s plastic melted and pieces were thrown around the room.

No explanation for what happened has been provided as of now, and it seems that the users did not tweak the smartphone in any way.

“To answer many questions: Everything was stock/Samsung that I had received when I purchased my phone. Stock battery, charger, etc. Additionally, my phone was not rooted,” the user said.
