Firefox OS, the mobile platform that Mozilla is currently working on, is getting closer to making an official appearance on shelves, with five countries expected to receive smartphones running under it as soon as June.

Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs confirmed to AllThingsD that the company is set to offer devices running under the platform in 11 other markets before year’s end, but that the United States wouldn’t receive them until 2014.

“We plan to launch in five countries in June and 11 more by the end of the year. We plan to hit Venezuela, Poland, Brazil, Portugal and Spain. […] We’ll hit the U.S. in 2014,” Kovacs said.

The main focus with Firefox OS will be on emerging markets, where Firefox already has a significant market share, he also explained. Users in the US, however, are more interested in high-end devices, while those powered by Firefox OS are low- to mid-end.
