One can make free calls from a website, or can use email to contact friends and family

Following a series of explosions that occurred at the Boston marathon on Monday, cell services across the city went down, reports claim.

Wireless coverage suffered due to high calls volume to and from the area, and multiple carriers confirmed a spike in calls after the explosions, a recent article on huffingtonpost reads.

However, it seems that people in the area who would like to contact family or friends can use alternatives, including email or online websites that offer calling capabilities.

As lifehacker notes, one such website is Twilio, which enables users to make calls to phone numbers from their computers by accessing this page, which will be up for as long as phone coverage in Boston remains poor.

To access the service, users will need to have Firefox or Chrome browsers installed on their PCs, and Adobe’s Flash Player enabled. Calls are free for both the caller and the receiver, but cannot be longer than 10 minutes.
