Torch Music 1.6.1157

Discover new artists, listen to playlists with this neat app
The internet is filled with applications that let you play and save songs, to discover new artists and share their work with friends.

Torch Music is one of such apps, but considering the number of users and available content, the app is surprisingly simple and lacks many features that are considered basic and absolutely mandatory.

Simplistic UI that lacks any kind of instructions

Although, one of the main characteristics of music-streaming apps is simplicity, Torch takes it to another level, but not in a good way. The whole concept behind Torch is to provide users with trending songs, helping them discover new artists that they might like.

The suggestions section is based on your preferences in accordance to the songs that you've listened to. If the interface gets confusing for new users, there's a FAQ section with answers to some of the usual questions that users have.

Sign in with Facebook to discover new songs

The app will read your profile and other personal data that you've stored on your account, but needs registration in order to save a list of songs you've listened to and provide suggestions.

Long press on a song and it will be added to the queue of your playlist, but be careful with scrolling as the UI is quite sensitive and you may add songs unintentionally.

All songs come with clips from YouTube and you can't disable video streaming, which is quite inconvenient if you're trying to limit battery consumption. You can't even change the video's image quality, in case your internet connection isn't the strongest.

This happens because Torch doesn't store music on its platform, but only provides suggestions, which makes us question the whole purpose of this app.

Other shortcomings

On the plus side, you can share videos with friends on multiple social networking accounts, manage your playlist easily and browse for other songs, while you continue to listen.

There's no option to like a song, comment on it, read more details about the artist or save audio to your phone. The app is only available with internet connection and is quite intrusive. There's no car mode, no sleep timer, no widget, the app won't play in the lock screen.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8

While the UI is quite fluent, it freezes often and videos take a while to load, depending on your internet connection.

Function6

It plays video and there's no option of disabling it. Overall, the app lacks many features now considered mandatory for music streaming apps.

Security8

It will peak into your account and phone, but without imposing major privacy risks.

Battery5

A major battery drainer because it plays mostly HQ videos and doesn't provide any option to disable them. Also, it needs constant internet connection.

Price10

Completely free of charge, no ads or in-app purchases whatsoever. It's only advantage over YouTube is that it doesn't play those annoying 30-second ads.

Compatibility8

In order to work, your device should be running Android version 2.3.3 or later.
