Solar System Explorer HD 2.6.31
Intuitive user-interface with all tools at hand
Normally, astronomy apps focus both on content and the UI. This app is no exception, the interface is extremely easy to use, all tools are displayed at the edge of the screen, without taking up too much space. There's a list of all planets in the solar system, together with asteroids and spacecrafts.
Learn more about the planets in our solar system
From the list of all planets, you can tap on one and the app displays the planet, together with it position towards the sun and other planets. You can zoom in or out, or rotate the planet and explore it from all sides. In addition, there's information on the planet and a Wikipedia link for more information. You can also read about the composition of the planet.
The app also displays the whole system and has a feature that enables planets to rotate on their axis for a certain period of time. You can adjust the speed, by increasing or decreasing it and enjoy the animation.
Check out asteroids and spacecrafts
Aside from planets in the solar system, the app also comes with animation of the main asteroids and spacecrafts out there. There's also detailed information and animation on rotation and speed. There's also a flight simulator. Using an onscreen gamepad you can explore the solar system on your own, pass by planets and asteroids and take a closer look.
Although this app's animation is somewhat impressive, the whole user experience is ruined by banner and fullscreen ads, but those aren't as annoying as the latest news section that opens up when the app is launched. Unfortunately, they aren't the latest news on astronomy in general, but latest posts on the developer's website. Also, some improvements could be done to images.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
The interface is cleverly designed, with all tools at hand but some improvements to the whole imagery are needed. |
Function8
The app and its animation work just fine. However, more information on planets would have been useful. |
Security7
Solar System Explorer HD requires quite a few permissions from your phone, including location. |
Battery7
Definitely a battery drainer, this app also overheats your phone so keep that in mind. |
Price7
Free of charge, but filled with ads and nagging messages to rate the app or try others made by the developer. |
Compatibility9
The app requires Android version 2.3 or later, making it accessible to many users. |
A neat app for exploring the solar system and its planets.
