Fortunately, there are many applications that could help you with that. One of them is Data Monitor. It provides a straight-forward interface for monitoring data usage on your phone. It's quite useful and does what it says but it could use some more features.
Clean interface with plenty of features at hand
The app launches directly with a tutorial showing new users how to access all sort of features inside the UI. The interface is quite clean with lots of features at hand, even if it doesn't use material design.
It has an overflow icon on the top of the screen with access to settings and the tutorial with tips. However, the tutorial needs a bit more work and a colored background, since the white text overlaps with the bright home screen. Other than that, the app doesn't really any any other extra sections but it does have controls in the notification bar.
Monitor your data usage
Launch the app and start monitoring your data usage, so that you wouldn't exceed the limit again. It displays a widget with data traffic on the top of the screen, which overlaps any other screens that you may work with.
It displays a chart with data usage by days, weeks and even months. You can also check the percentage of data that you've used out of the mobile limit. It shows users how much WiFi and mobile data they've used.
View which app consumes the most
Another section lets users view which app consumes the most resources, together with the amount and percentage out of the total. There are some settings that you can make, like change the unit for the band rate, assign actions for when you tap on the icon in the notification area or adjust screen orientation.
You can also establish limits per month, weeks or days. The display position can be easily changed by adjusting it on the screen. Users can unlock premium features inside the app, like the option to display the current traffic in the status bar. You can also buy widgets for your home screen, hide ads or enable all features for 5$.
