Gmail 1.8.0.5

Receive, send and manage your email messages with a handy client for the Gmail service
Communication takes various forms today and one of the most commonly encountered is the email exchange with which most users are accustomed already.

Depending on the preferred service provider, Windows Phone users can opt for specialized mail clients to use onto their devices. Gmail is one such app and it bears a suggestive name, so things are pretty clear insofar as the purpose of this utility is concerned.

Simple front-end designed for ease of use

Through a clean and tidy interface, this application provides access to all the messages stored into your Gmail account. The main menu containing all the commands and functions is conveniently placed in the lower side of the screen, for quick access.

The navigation among messages and various menus feels pretty good, but sometimes it takes a few seconds too much to respond to the commands and load the contents of a certain mail folder or display an email in full.

There are some ads to be found inside this app, but they have a special place where they reside, in the "Settings" menu, so they are far less irritating than the flashing banners displayed by similar utilities.

Elementary functions for creating and managing emails

The basic features of any mail client are well represented in Gmail, as it allows you to read incoming messages send replies to the sender or forward the emails. Managing labels is not possible at this time, as you can only view and browse the main list.

The emails can be archived or starred as favorites with a single tap, while the management of the account settings is not available. The Start screen tile will display the number of new messages in your inbox, but getting push notifications is only available after purchasing this feature.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • displays the number of incoming messages on the Start screen tile

misses

  • cannot handle several mail accounts
  • push notifications are not available without a purchase
  • lacks user account management features
  • tends to become slow at times in loading emails and responding to basic commands
Bottom Line
Design / UI6

The plain and clean looks of Gmail facilitate browsing and reading the messages, but this overly simplified layout and the complete lack of customization options could work against it. Also, the occasional glitches and slowdowns make this app lose some points in this area.

Function6

The basic features offered by this application should be enough for users who simply need a means of reading and sending messages, but in case someone needs to make some modifications to the personal account, for example, they will still have to go online and log in through an Internet browser to get the job done.

Security7

Gmail needs to access personal information, given its functionality, so it will look into the phone dialer, contacts and requires the location services to be active.

Battery8

When it comes to the power consumption, the app needs a fairly decent amount of power, but the constant checks and the fact that it must be connected to the Internet at all times will take a moderate amount of energy.

Price8

Most of the functions provided by Gmail come free of cost, but the useful push notifications and the ad removal will require the purchase of an upgrade.

Compatibility8

Prepared to run on Windows Phone 8 and above devices, this application needs a screen resolution that is at least of 480x80 pixels.
