Voice Chat 2.3

Have a fun time chatting with a virtual friend that comes up with some really witty lines
There are many ways of killing time and if you feel in the mood to talk to someone but don't want to bother your friends for chitchat, you can grab your Windows Phone and have a little get-together with Eve.

As you might have already guessed, it's not a real person we're talking about here, but a chat bot, in fact an actually smart conversation partner you can get a hold of through an app called Voice Chat.

Pleasant and easy to use interface

The beautifully designed background on which the conversation will take place looks like a normal chat, with the questions and answers of each party involved shown in distinct colors.

There are some hindrances you will come across while Voice Chat is running, in the form of some persistent prompts to evaluate the app or subscribe to a mailing list to receive some sort of offers and other kind of information.

Voice and text chat in multiple languages

Both voice and text conversations carry on pretty smoothly, with a bit of a pause between question and answer because Eve has to analyze the input you provide and throw the appropriate line your way. A neat feature of Voice Chat is the multilingual support it comes with, allowing you to pick from several languages for both menus and conversation.

The often hilarious remarks of the chat bot can become repetitive if you keep asking the same questions, but otherwise, it can surprise you with some coherent answers. Even if you try to use a harsher tone, Eve will remain composed and reply politely.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • supports several languages

misses

  • very intrusive prompts to subscribe to special offers
  • too few customizations for the GUI
Bottom Line
Design / UI7

The looks of this app are quite polished, but there are little customizations users can apply, with only the colors of the questions and answers being available for modification.

Function6

The answers Eve has for any question or remark coming from the user are most of the time quite inspired, but there are situations in which the bot is not fully aware of the meaning of the words addressed to it, or the audio input is not interpreted correctly. Also, at times the app will throw an error out of the blue, for no apparent reason.

Security9

Without requiring access to any sensitive areas of the phone, Voice Chat preserves the privacy of the user data. Only if someone agrees to yield to the relentless prompts and subscribe to the newsletter will they share an e-mail address and perhaps some other personal details.

Battery6

The app puts a moderate load on system resources as it needs the Internet connection to be alive at all times, so the WiFi will consume most of the power while the utility is running.

Price7

Since you get only 20 answers in the trial version it's hard to cover all the angles and see how it fares in diverse situations. Nonetheless, users should be able to make a rough idea whether it is worth or not shelling out a buck on this.

Compatibility9

Since Voice Chat works on Windows Phone 7.5 and up handsets, most users will be able to take it for a spin, especially because there are no special requirements. A minimum screen resolution of 480 by 800 is sufficient.
