The Onion 2.2.0.0
The Onion offers a wide variety of possibilities and the well-known satiric tone that is characteristic to the content they publish can now be enjoyed on the go through a dedicated app that has the same name.
Nicely designed GUI with a smart layout
The application greets you with a relatively simple interface, that has some common graphics, but a neat background and keeps the content very well organized.
Going through the various sections of the utility is pretty smooth, with a bit of delay when fetching the content from the online database at startup.
During this operation the navigation might become a bit less responsive, but it usually is a matter of a couple of seconds until everything is back to normal.
A lot more annoying are the advertisement banners that seem to be glued to the bottom of the screen where they are constantly flashing and changing.
Read and share the news on the go
The full articles are available inside The Onion and you can read them effortlessly as the application supports both portrait and landscape screen orientations.
The content is structured into several sections, so you can get the "breaking" news, videos or radio news, as well as the sports info and the popular articles each from their corresponding module.
Any article you read and like can be added to your favorites section and if you feel like sharing the fun, send away the links to your friends via Facebook, Twitter, email or SMS, straight from inside the app.
Multimedia content included for extra fun
The images that come with most articles can be opened in full and zoomed in with intuitive touch gestures, while the audio files open inside The Onion thanks to its own built-in player. The video content, when available, should do the same thing.
The "Search" feature that appears inside this app doesn't seem to be any good, as it always tells you there has been a network failure and it cannot fetch any content at all.
Fortunately, the live tile you can pin to the Start screen works a little bit better, so you can enjoy every hour or two new headlines in there.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
The looks can be customized to a certain extent and the graphics are decent, but the insistent adverts spoil much of the fun. |
Function7
The utility offers some good features, but some functions fail to work properly and this makes it lose some points. |
Security8
Without being too prying while it runs, The Onion still needs to access the owner and phone identities for some reason. |
Battery4
There is a considerable power consumption while the application runs, so the battery usage reaches very high levels. |
Price9
Every feature inside this utility is free to enjoy, but in order to get rid of the annoying adverts a payment is required. |
Compatibility10
Any Windows Phone handset can have this app installed and running well, as it only needs version 7 of the OS. |
