SpeedGauge 2.3
SpeedGauge is one of the tools that you can install and try onto your handset as it offers a set of basic features for monitoring the speed of the vehicle you are in, as well as measuring the miles you travel.
Simple and clean appearance for increased visibility
This application comes with a plain design, focusing on delivering accurate speed and distance measurements and making them very easy to read.
Against the black background of the main screen are displayed the bright numbers that indicate the current speed and you can pick a different color from the 4 hues available in the "Preferences" area.
The graphics are well designed for both digital and analogue meters, but there are some ad banners shown inside the GUI that can be really disruptive and interfere with the speed monitoring.
Triple measurement unit system and H.U.D. capabilities
SpeedGauge is designed to let you check out the speed value using 3 different reference systems. More precisely, you can have the data shown in miles per hour, kilometers per hour or in knots, which makes this app suitable for use on land, air and water means of transportation.
You can use this utility as an alternative speedometer to the one built-in your car by activating the Head-Up Display (H.U.D.) feature with a single tap. This function works by projecting the live readings onto the vehicle's windshield when the phone is placed right under it.
Basic statistics for speed and distance
The application has a specialized section where the collected data can be viewed and cleared if you want to get a completely new set of stats.
SpeedGauge includes no more than 3 parameters in the "Statistics" area and they pertain to the total distance covered while the app was active, the maximum and average speed values, expressed in the currently selected unit of measurement.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
The looks of this app are fairly good, with nice graphics and a bit of color customizations for the gauge digits, but it loses some points because of the ads and the somewhat reduced brightness that makes the H.U.D. a bit difficult. |
Function7
The utility offers a rather small number of features, with the measurement unit switch placed inconveniently under the "Preferences" menu and providing only a few stats. The H.U.D. capability saves it a lot of points, but it also needs to be improved a bit. |
Security7
SpeedGauge wants to look into the phone dialer, owner identity and inside the multimedia libraries as well for no good reason. |
Battery6
While the app is functioning, the power consumption reaches high values and this translates into a very significant battery usage. |
Price8
This tool offers a good means of measuring speed and distance, while also providing a neat H.U.D. feature, but it has some shortcomings that diminish its value compared to other similar tools. |
Compatibility10
All Windows Phone handsets on the market can have this application installed as it needs at least version 7 of the operating system to run correctly. |
