Smart Search 1.0.0.0
For Windows Phone users, the applications that are created for such purposes are less numerous, but some of the few ones that can be found in the Store are well worth a try and Smart Search is a good example in this respect.
Well organized front-end, with decent graphics
This utility was created mainly for functionality, so the interface has only a few elements that could catch the eye. However, the looks are not completely dull, as the icons for the various content categories shown inside the app are clean and well designed.
Going through the result categories and the numerous items this application may identify after conducting a query is simple, but there are some important delays while the search is in progress.
Opening the selected pictures may take an extra second or two, while Smart Search plays the audio files pretty promptly and, fortunately, without any noticeable lags.
Search and view local files
The queries you carry out will reveal all the photos, contacts, calendar events and music tracks that are stored locally, onto your mobile device. For each category of items you are presented with, you can view the total number and fold down or up the entire set of results, which will save a lot of space on screen.
For the contacts that match your query terms you have at your disposal a quick dial button and a send SMS command, while the music files identified by Smart Search can be played with the basic "next", "previous", "play/pause" controls at hand.
The images can be viewed as they open up with one tap and you will be able to check them out in both landscape and portrait screen orientations, but there are no zooming or panning commands you can use.
Several online queries at your fingertips
Insofar as the other search engines that are part of the package are concerned, they will make it possible for you to carry out some more specialized queries, like Wiki or Maps searches and even find apps in the Store that match the keywords you input in the search field.
A special behavior is observed on Windows Phone 8.1 where if you use the "Search in Bing" option, Cortana will automatically take over on the devices where it is installed and activated.
Customizing the query options for each of the categories that are included in the local search is possible via the "Settings" menu, from where you can choose some of the elements that you want to leave out or add to the lookup operation.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
The GUI is a bit disappointing from the visual standpoint and only the practicality of the layout and good organization of the features save it more points. |
Function8
The app can look for info in plenty of system areas and offers some neat online searches as well, but it moves slowly at times and lacks social network integration. |
Security10
This utility needs to access many areas of the system that contain personal data, but it has good reasons for doing so in every case. |
Battery5
Smart Search requires quite a bit of power to function and its battery usage reaches constantly high values. |
Price10
Everything inside this application is free to enjoy and there are no adverts or other nuisances of the same sort, so it has an excellent value overall. |
Compatibility9
Those who want to experience the searching capabilities of this app will have to use it on Windows Phone 8 or higher handsets. |
