SkyType 1.0.2.0
For those who want to try a completely new experience and remotely control their Windows Phone handset to a certain extent, SkyType is one of the best choices.
Crisp graphics and simple layout
This utility comes with a nice looking GUI that features a smooth background and some carefully designed graphics that are consistent from end to end. The functions are conveniently placed and with swipe movements you can access the options (swipe left) and quick text sending (swipe right) areas.
The web interface is also very stylish and there is a "compatibility mode" you can activate in order to access the controls from old browsers or antiquated devices.
Somewhat of a bother are the insistent prompts to rate SkyType that appear even from the first run, but there are some ad banners as well inside the main screen, which spoil a bit of the good feel of the app.
Input text from a remote device and the other way round
When it comes to composing and sending email or SMS messages and even chatting with Viber or WhatsApp you can use the PC, for example and type everything from the physical keyboard. Using the web interface to make phone calls is also supported.
Any device that can access the SkyType dashboard through a web browser that is JavaScript compatible is good to go.
The application will make it possible for you to send texts back to the connected device by means of the same web interface and it is even capable of uploading to OneDrive, storing the content inside a text file.
Open links and activate functions on third-party apps
With the help of this utility you can open webpages from a computer or other device in a very simple manner, by simply pasting the URL in the dedicated box of the "Web Links" area.
SkyType supports the default system browser (Internet Explorer) as well as UC Browser and the development continues to add more entries.
A great feature of this app is the ability to open YouTube video links or queries in specialized apps installed onto your phone, as well as the status update function for social sites or music app search.
Finding places around the world is possible thanks to the integration with Bing Maps and you can even look for apps in the Windows Phone Store remotely, all from the same web interface.

Bottom Line
Design / UI9
The neat aspect of the phone app and the cool web interface are well worth appreciation, unlike the ad banners and frequent prompts. |
Function8
The feature set is pretty well put together, but many actions require confirmation on the handset, so the control is not complete in this respect. |
Security10
SkyType is safe to have installed and in use onto any compatible device as it only looks inside the system areas that are related to its functionality. |
Battery5
There is a significant power consumption while this application is running, so the battery usage remains at high levels. |
Price9
The utility is well worth at least a try as it offers some neat functions completely free, with only some ads and prompts to affect its value. |
Compatibility9
The more recent devices that are running Windows Phone 8 or higher support this app and the only requirement on the other end is a JavaScript compatible web browser. |
