Secret Text 1.1.0.0

A handy utility that can help you send messages encoded with custom encryption keys
When getting in touch with friends and chatting or texting using one of the numerous dedicated applications or online services more and more users pay more attention to the privacy related aspects and try to secure their communications to avoid having their personal data and conversations exposed.

Should you care to make it really hard for anyone outside your trusted circle to decipher the texts exchanged with your peers a utility like Secret Text could be a neat addition to your Windows Phone apps.

Dull and sombre appearance, focused on practical use

The application was designed with absolutely no concern for the attractiveness of the graphics, so the whole interface is lacking any trace of visual appeal. Fortunately, the ease of use was included in the development plan, so the functions are all placed at hand, in the menu that resides at the bottom of the main screen.

There is enough space for writing the text inside the workspace, though the box is not as extensive as inside similar apps. A very noticeable hindrance comes from the continuously changing ad banners that are shown in the upper part of the screen.

Create an encryption key and cipher the text on the spot

Secret Text gives you full control over the procedure, so you have to come up with your own secret key that will be used by the app for encoding the content you input in the next step. A neat thing about this tool is that it is not limited in terms of length or characters used for this passcode.

On the downside, there is a strange behavior related to the numbers you include in a message that you want to encrypt. More precisely, the application will not scramble the figures in any way, leaving them completely exposed.

To send out the ciphered bits you have at your disposal only one alternative, namely the SMS messages which this utility can start delivering after a couple of taps.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • allows users to create encryption keys of any length and containing any letter, symbol and number

misses

  • doesn't encrypt numbers in the texts added by the user
  • ugly and poorly designed interface
  • lots of irritating adverts inside
  • accesses some system areas unrelated to its functionality
Bottom Line
Design / UI3

The uninspired GUI, lacking any elements of design that would make the app less dull loses a lot of points, especially considering the very annoying flashing ad banners shown inside the interface.

Function7

Secret Text offers only a limited set of features for handling the text, encoded data and the distribution method, even if it allows the creation of lengthy and complex encryption keys.

Security7

The utility needs to look into several areas of the system and for several of them it doesn't have a good reason.

Battery7

This app will take up a quite noticeable amount of energy, so the power consumption is high at times, making the battery usage go beyond moderate levels.

Price7

The range of uses for this tool is not too broad and there are some shortcomings that make it lose some of its overall value.

Compatibility9

Secret Text is suitable for use on almost all Windows Phone handsets out there, as it only needs version 7.5 of the operating system to work well.
