Scientific Calc 1.6

Perform simple and complex calculations with no efforts using a dedicated app
Users who find the Windows Phone built-in calculator insufficient for their purposes have a lot of alternatives to choose from inside the Store.

From the really simple to the very complex and highly specialized, these tools offer a wide array of functions and apps like Scientific Calc try to find a balance in between to cater to the needs of more users.

Simplified interface and classical layout for ease of use

The application has a common look that will be familiar to anyone who has used a couple of different calculation solutions. The color scheme emphasizes the differences between the various features and commands, so you can distinguish with ease between the memory functions and the actual buttons for the basic operations.

The scientific view is evidently more complex and it is displayed only in landscape mode for convenience. There are some bothersome ad banners displayed inside the basic calculator screen, while in the scientific more they disappear because, fortunately, there is no room left for them.

Elementary and advanced calculations at your fingertips

Scientific Calc is suitable for many types of operations, from the more simple to the more complicated like combinations and permutations. The scientific section also features trigonometric, logarithmic and arithmetic functions.

This utility is equipped with a most useful list of constants you can use in your computations and it has many entries, which include Avogadro's number, Faraday's constant, the values for the permeability and permittivity of Space, so you can use the tool for math and physics related calculations.

A neat feature is the ability to copy the results or pretty much any number shown on the calculator display with a simple double tap on it.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • includes a useful list of constants used in various fields of science
  • supports permutations and combinations
  • users can copy the results with two taps

misses

  • needs a lot of improvements in the visual department
  • lacks a few basic functions
Bottom Line
Design / UI6

The appearance could use some improvements as it is not the fairest of them all and the two modes of the calculator depend each on a separate screen layout. The color scheme is decent, but in the scientific view the buttons for the advanced operations have the same color as the memory buttons.

Function7

The feature set is rather common and shares many functions with other similar apps, but has some particularities that can give it the edge in some situations. It needs a few improvements as it lacks, for example, the parenthesis and the percentage functions.

Security7

It may be a simple calculator, but this app needs access, for some reason, to sensitive areas of the system like the phone dialer or the owner and phone identities.

Battery8

The battery usage is moderate as the utility takes up a decent amount of power most of the time it is up and running.

Price8

Scientific Calc offers all its functions freely, with the advertisement banners the only visible hindrance, but there are on the market many utilities better equipped than this one.

Compatibility9

A tool that can run on most Windows Phone devices, this application only requires version 7.5 and above of the operating system to function properly.
