HDR X 1.6.0.0
HDR X is one such app and it lives to serve Windows Phone users who are eager to make their photos stand out. The name says it all about the purpose this tool is made for, so after a few tries you might be convinced to keep it for a while at least.
Pleasant GUI and seamless operation
This application has a nicely designed interface, with a decent background and smooth transitions when navigating through its menus. The dual preview offered by this app, with the HDR image on top of the original picture is great for viewing the modifications as they happen.
However, there is something that you will surely not appreciate too much and that is the presence of some flashing banners in the lower part of the screen.
Capture photos and turn them into amazing HDR images
The simple live capture feature HDR X comes with is accompanied by an advanced mode in which you get a bit of assistance in taking the necessary snapshots for putting together a High Dynamic Range image.
A steady hand is a must when taking photos in the advanced mode because in most cases, if you twitch a bit, the pictures will no longer align correctly. The focusing part is handled by the app and you have at your disposal a timer and a composition grid that can help a lot.
The adjustments can be done manually as well, so you can set the levels for saturation, gamma, or noise suppression by moving some sliders. Unfortunately, HDR X crashes occasionally after taking a photo in the advanced mode and you will have to go to the "my gallery" section to find the saved image and customize it.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
The application looks pretty well overall, even if the tiles in the home screen appear a bit oversized, basically splitting the screen into four sections. The commands are conveniently placed for ease of access, but the "before/after" view can be difficult to use because it barely fits half of each section in the same view. The animated ads also work against the app, as they are quite bothersome and shown in every screen. |
Function8
The toolset HDR X is equipped with is average, as it consists mostly of the image adjustments that are meant for tweaking the loaded picture. The self timer is a good idea that can prove useful when the phone used from a fixed position, while the numerous advanced settings for configuring the capture mode also earn this app some points. |
Security8
Overall, this utility seems to behave well insofar as the handling of personal data is concerned, but it still requires access to the location services and phone identity. |
Battery5
The power consumption for this app is high, given the advanced processing it has to use in order to create the HDR images. Using it continuously for a longer period of time will surely drain the battery in a couple of hours. |
Price8
Since all the features provided by HDR X come free of cost, it would seem it is a pretty sweet deal, but the advertisements and lack of more advanced functions that are present in similar apps decrease its value a bit. |
Compatibility8
The application will run on any Windows Phone 8 and above handset, as it only needs a screen resolution of 720x1280, 480x800 or 768x1280 pixels. |
