Free Recorder 1.5.0.0
For those who own a Windows Phone handset things may have just become easier thanks to a specialized utility that has a suggestive name: Free Recorder.
Uncomplicated front-end, with a tidy layout
The looks of this application are very simple and completely unadorned, with only the main functions and commands shown in plain sight. Going from one section of the app into another is done very smoothly and without delays or other flaws.
The operation is simple and the transitions among the various areas of the utility are fluent and without any visible delays or some other kind of glitches inside Free Recorder.
One tap capture and quick save
This utility is a breeze to use since it doesn't have any configurations, so you can start the audio capture right away from the main screen of the application.
With one tap on the dedicated button on the main screen the recording is triggered and you can stop in a similar manner to have the file saved and available for the "Storage" section.
For the saved files you have the possibility to edit the info, more precisely give them specific names and, optionally, add text descriptions.
Play on the spot the recordings or upload them
A useful set of controls appear when the recording is complete or while you play back the captured audio file. To be more precise, you have at your disposal a volume slider and a neat adjustment for modifying the pitch, so you can obtain some pretty funny effects.
In case you select this option for the "Settings" menu, Free Recorder can use the system media player instead of the one that 's built-in and a nice thing is that you can have it running under the locked screen, an option active by default.
Transferring files from the app's local storage to an online account is possible, as the utility integrates with OneDrive. Thus, it allows you to quickly upload the sound file by accessing this option form the menu that appears when pressing for a couple of seconds on any of the recordings.
Should you care to keep close at hand some of the audio files you captures, the application enables you to pin any of them to the Start screen.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
The looks of Free Recorder are less impressive, as it focuses on practicality, but it manages to offer a well organized front-end. |
Function8
The simple operation is a great advantage, but sound files cannot be edited, only their names. The cloud upload and the ability to pin sounds to the Start screen are very welcomed, though. |
Security5
The utility needs to access quite a few sensitive areas of the system and not a single one of them is related to its actual functionality. |
Battery6
The power consumption for this app is considerable and the battery usage remains at high levels even when the tool runs in the background. |
Price10
The utility offers everything it's got free of costs and without major annoyances, so it has an excellent value on the whole. |
Compatibility9
Those who want use this app have to try it on a Windows Phone 8 or above handset, without other special requirements. |
