FMCalc 1.1.0.0

A valuable helper for all those involved in studying and practicing medicine who need to carry out specific calculations
Medicine is very complex and so are the formulas and computations often required for diagnosis or patient evaluation. Doctors and medicine students who want to have a specialized calculator at hand for solving these complex problems can enjoy a dedicated app, tailored for Windows Phone devices.

Going by the name of FMCalc, this utility is jam-packed with all sorts of calculators and formula solvers in order to help in determining the scores for various evaluations.

Decent interface bent on functionality

The simple look of the app is mostly black and white, with a few patches of color to be found here and there, mainly where the calculations are accompanied by graphs.

Browsing the list of supported tools and going inside them to carry out the computations is pretty smooth and there are no glitches in displaying the data input areas or in showing the results.

Carry out a variety of calculations with the built-in tools

Even if it doesn't cover all the possible areas where medical calculations are required, FMCalc still provides a lot of useful tools, well organized under relevant categories, so as to make them accessible a lot easier than from the main list that contains all the entries.

Thus, there are anaesthesia, cardio and gastro formulas and calculators available, as well as neuro, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, respiratory and surgery tools. The measurement units used throughout the app belong to the International System of Units (SI) and this cannot be changed to other reference systems, at this time at least.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • contains a good variety of calculators and formula solvers
  • perfectly safe to use and compatible with all Windows Phone handsets
  • low footprint on system resources and battery usage

misses

  • unpolished, overly simplified interface
  • lacks other measurement units than those of the International System of Units
Bottom Line
Design / UI5

The interface needs a lot of work to become more visually attractive since it is currently focusing exclusively on functionality. The smooth navigation and the rather well organized layout save it some points in this section.

Function8

Very well prepared for performing the most common calculations and solving medical formulas widely used by doctors of numerous specialties, FMCalc only needs to provide a choice for measurement units and add more tools for physicians, students and even patients.

Security10

The app scores top marks here as it doesn't require access to anything stored on the phone and it doesn't even think about sending out any data.

Battery9

The calculations put very little stress on the battery and the power usage is low to average, so this utility can be safely used even for longer periods of time, as it will surely not drain all the energy out of the handset.

Price10

FMCalc is a very valuable asset not only because it offers all the functions free of cost, but also thanks to the complete lack of ads and annoying prompts so often encountered in similar apps. Also, it has the merit of being one of the few if not the only utility of this kind currently available in the Store.

Compatibility10

Suitable for every single Windows Phone device out there, from version 7 up, this application has absolutely no requirements other than a standard screen resolution of at least 480by 800 pixels.
