Explore City 1.0.0.0
For those who want to keep close at hand a companion that knows where to find a dozen different types of places, be them public, administration or banking related, Explore City is one of the apps to try.
Clean and simple layout for quick access
This utility has a tidy interface, with a white and blue theme that is consistent throughout the application. The numerous tiles that appear on the main screen have a very nice design, with suggestive icons on each of them.
The order in which the items are arranged in the main list is random and there is no way of grouping the tiles otherwise, so as to have, for example, "Hospital" next to "Medicine" or the "Repair" tile next to the one for searching "Fuel" locations.
HERE Maps integration for finding places on the go
Explore City comes with 12 main categories that cover everything from entertainment, to transportation and medical care. As soon as you select one of the listed entries the app will send the query to HERE Maps and the results will be displayed and marked appropriately on the map.
Since the GPS function of the phone is used, the data takes a couple of seconds to load, but after that, navigating around the map is fairly smooth. Also, the places of interest, corresponding to the search are marked on the map and you can get details about them and directions for getting there with one tap.
Unfortunately, the application relies exclusively on the above mentioned solution, which is only designed for Nokia Lumia handsets, so other types of Windows Phone devices will not be able to benefit from it.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
The looks of this application are pretty decent despite the simpleness of the theme, but the main drawback seems to be the lack of a certain order in arranging the tiles inside the main screen. |
Function6
The utility provides a pretty decent array of useful locations to look for while on the go, but it is dependent on another app, so it only saves a couple of extra taps if one is to carry out the query directly in HERE Maps. |
Security9
Besides the maps and location services, which are necessary for the app to function, it needs access to the music library for some reason. |
Battery8
The utility itself has a relatively small power consumption as it merely hosts a set of search shortcuts, so the battery usage remains moderate. |
Price8
The app serves as a repository for some useful queries that can be called to find a variety of places of interest near any location, but its value is still lesser than that of other similar tools. |
Compatibility6
Only Windows Phone users with a Nokia Lumia handset can have this app installed and it needs at least version 8 of the OS, an active GPS and HERE Maps to function properly. |
