Earthquake Alert 1.0.4.0
Since predicting these movements of the Earth and warning people beforehand is work in progress still, people can follow the quakes as they occur, using some dedicated apps like Earthquake Alert.
Plain looks and easy to read layout
This utility comes with a simple and unadorned interface in which the contained data is presented into a fairly organized manner, with all the relevant details for each earthquake included.
The map view that you can bring up by selecting any of the entries on the list in the main screen helps you get an accurate localization and see exactly the spot where the epicenter of that quake was located.
In the lower side of the screen you will see a continuous stream of ad banners that are changing constantly, while once in a while a couple of prompts to rate and review the app will appear from nowhere.
Earthquake information on the go
This application gathers its data from the U.S. Geological Survey website and displays official data concerning each recorded event. On the downside, the list presented inside Earthquake Alert is far from being complete and many quakes, even some of significant magnitude are not shown.
Except for the map localization via Bing, which is available for all the items, you can check out from the main screen, there is a bit of extra info provided for the last recorded seism. Thus, besides the magnitude, location and date you can also view the depth and exact coordinates (latitude and longitude).

Bottom Line
Design / UI5
The app is lacking visual appeal and the fluent navigation through the list and the responsive map orientation will only save it a few points from this perspective. |
Function6
There are too many earthquakes that are missing from the list and a bit of extra details are only available for the last quake. The map localization feature is a good addition, but the app goes very little back in history, while the update frequency is not keeping the pace with the info available o the online website. |
Security7
The application needs to access several areas of the system that are not related in any way with its functionality, like the phone dialer or the owner and phone identities. |
Battery7
There is a noticeable power consumption that goes past average levels and so the battery usage remains above moderate for most of the time. |
Price8
Earthquake Alert offers a decent amount of information and it is all free, but those who want more details and a complete list of quakes may be a bit disappointed. |
Compatibility9
This utility is ready to run on most Windows Phone devices as it only needs version 7.5 and above of the operating system to function correctly. |
