Compass by eyacker.com 8.4.1.1
Windows Phone users who want to avoid getting lost and rely on their mobile device to help them in need may be interested in trying an application like Compass that has a clear purpose, suggested by its very name.
Plain, but customizable GUI, with a clear display
The focus when creating this app was only on functionality, as you will realize when coming face to face with the front-end of this utility. Fortunately, you have several themes at your disposal, 4 in all, so you can change the compass dial whenever you see fit via the dedicated area of the "Settings" menu.
The response for every detected movement is instant and accurate, so you can enjoy a nice experience, without any wobbling from the compass needle or the dial. Also, the data shown inside the main screen is written in a large font and colored in bright red, making it easy to read.
There is a noticeable drawback from the visual perspective and it is represented by the presence of the flashing ad banners in the upper part of the screen.
Fast calibration and straightforward orientation
In order to obtain the best results and navigate accurately, Compass will ask you carry out the calibration procedure and all the necessary information on how to do it is outlined in the calibration screen.
The degrees relative to the current position of North are shown right in the middle of the screen and the values modify simultaneously with the movement of the compass pointer, so it is pretty safe to say that this info is presented in real time.
The current heading is always shown by the red arrow, while the cardinal points and the degrees are inscribed onto the rotating dial, so you also have their precise positioning at hand.
A neat feature of this application is the ability to run without being affected by the lock screen, as it is disabled by default. In case you want to change this option, all you have to do is head on to the "General" area of the "Settings" menu and tap the corresponding switch to activate or deactivate it.

Bottom Line
Design / UI6
The appearance of this utility is uncomplicated, but also unadorned and the few dial themes barely compensate for the annoying ads. |
Function7
As a basic compass this application does a good job, but has few useful extras that can be helpful for all users. |
Security7
Besides the system sections it has to look into according to its functions, Compass also peeks inside some secure areas for no good reason. |
Battery2
The stress on the battery is extremely high and the application uses up a lot of power when running in the background as well. |
Price9
Despite the shortcoming of having flashing ads inside, this app performs very well and can be a reliable tool for any user. |
Compatibility10
Any compass-equipped device that runs Windows Phone 7.5 and above is suited to have this app installed and functioning correctly. |
