Plain and unappealing interface
The focus when creating this app was only on functionality, as you will realize when coming face to face with the front-end of this utility.
There are no major distractions in the main screen, only a message banner stamped in the upper part of the screen and which will go away as soon as you rate the app, as it prompts you to.
You have the possibility to modify the compass face color and choose between contrast or accent colors and also choose what should be displayed on screen, namely all the cardinal points or only North.
Calibrate the compass and get directions on the spot
The display is highly responsive and all the compass needle adjustments are made in real-time, almost without any delay. The degrees relative to the current position of North are shown right in the middle of the compass and the value modifies just as fast as the compass pointer, but it lacks the gradations available in other apps of this kind.
However, in order to get accurate readings it is mandatory to perform a calibration of the compass by following the simple on-screen instructions. The current accuracy of the compass is shown in the lower part of the calibration screen.
Compass 8.1 can be used to navigate by orienting with the true North or the magnetic North, depending on the selection you make from the "Settings" area. Also in order to avoid having the phone screen locked automatically, there is a dedicated option you can activate to prevent this from happening.
