CNN News 1.0.0.0
CNN is without a doubt one of the top name sin the business and it is recognized and accepted by many as a premier source of info, regardless of the domain of interest.
In case you also want to get the latest scoops while on the go, you can try a simple utility for your Windows Phone that also has a suggestive name: CNN News.
Clean layout and average looks
This app is less visually appealing as it is bent on functionality, so the plain graphics and lack of cool graphics are partially compensated through a convenient and easily accessible layout.
There are no categories or some type of filtering you can apply to sort out the various articles from the main screen of the app. Going through the list is smooth and you can tap on any entry and then browse the news by swiping to the left instead of scrolling the full list.
The image quality is very poor, so even if you can open them separately and zoom in, thing will only get worse if you do so, at least from the visual perspective.
Select and read the news on the go
The headline of each article is what you will get inside CNN News, but you can still enjoy the complete story if you simply go to the source by using the dedicated button hosted in the lower side of the screen.
There is even a "Video News" section inside this application, but it doesn't display anything, so it is pretty much of no use at this time.
A neat feature of this utility is its ability to read out loud the news it has in store, while for any article you want to keep close at hand and access at a later time you can use the "Pin" functionality to have to added to the Start screen of your mobile device.
The application doesn't support selecting or copying the content, but you can easily share the articles with your friends, as several methods are ready for use.
More precisely, you have the possibility to send out the link to the respective article via email, SMS or social networks. You can share the news as your current status as well, while the images that are attached to the news pieces can be sent separately as well.
In case you opt for the separate "Share by email" option, you will be sending no only the link to the source page, but also the subtitle, while the title is used as the subject of the message, which saves you some time that you would spend composing the email.

Bottom Line
Design / UI5
The unappealing and dull GUI loses a lot not only because it is simply unattractive but due to the low quality of the pictures it has in store. |
Function3
There are no categories, the content is not updated as often as it should be, while the feature set is slim, lacking many options. |
Security7
The app needs to look inside several areas of the system, including the current location, even if this is not related to its functionality. |
Battery6
When used over long periods of time, the utility has a substantial power consumption, which translates into a high battery usage. |
Price10
CNN News doesn't ask for anything in return for providing the news articles, so it has an excellent value from this perspective. |
Compatibility9
This app works well with Windows Phone 8 and above handsets, so anyone with one such device will be able to use it without any issues. |
