BBC NewsReader 1.2.0.0
For any Windows Phone user interested in following the news stream for the British Broadcasting Corporation, there are numerous apps that can bring the articles close at hand and BBC NewsReader is one of them.
Plain looks, with a simple layout
The application comes with a decent GUI, well organized, even if it doesn't excel from the visual perspective. The content is structured neatly, to make it a breeze to access any article regardless of the section you are currently browsing.
The images inside the pieces of news you have at your fingertips are of a lesser quality than the originals. A real nuisance is the presence of some animated ad banners that keep on changing at the top of the screen, while from time to time you will also come across some prompts for rating and reviewing the app.
Pick the categories and browse the news sections
The first thing you will have to do when opening BBC NewsReader for the first time is picking a set of at least 6 news sections you want to have displayed onto the main screen. You can select as many as you want from the list you are presented with and the categories will be neatly ordered on two columns you can then access with one tap.
Inside each section you will have at your disposal a selection of 25 articles, arranged in chronological order. Besides reading the articles inside the application, you can have the original news opened in Internet Exporer or share the link via email, SMS or on Facebook with a couple of taps.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
This utility has a rather simple appearance, with a good organization of the content, but lacking a lot in terms of quality for the images. |
Function7
The basic set of features doesn't provide too many options for users, who are limited to reading the articles or sharing the links. |
Security7
The application will require access to the phone dialer, owner and phone identities and even to the SD card without any relation to its actual functionality. |
Battery7
The battery usage is a bit above moderate because BBC NewsReader needs quite a bit of power to run properly. |
Price7
The app serves it purpose fairly well, but there are some shortcomings and misses that make it a less likely choice for those who want to get BBC News content onto their phones. |
Compatibility8
Only those users who own a Windows Phone 8 and above device will be able to install and use this application onto their handsets. |
