Voice Generator 2.4

Type something, listen to the text spoken out lout in various voices
Developer Pocket Books says its Voice Generator app is for prank calling, but it’s uncertain how exactly these jokes would work. The app doesn’t have a built-in calling function, so you’d probably need another phone to get the job done. We see other purposes for this app.

Looks okay but it’s chock full of ads

Despite being designed to work with firmwares as low as iOS 4.3, Voice Generator has been constantly updated to support the latest iOS versions. While the UI is certainly polished, the layout is very counter-intuitive, while the the sheer amount of ads and nag screens that start appearing “before” you actually get to use the app is very, very annoying.

There’s an Google ad at the top, an ad for buying other voices at the bottom, and once every two app launches a full-screen ad pops up. What’s worse, the rate-us nag screens are unstoppable.

Not much usefulness

According to the description, Voice Generator is for prank calls. How exactly isn’t certain. You can type something in the text field and hit play to listen to the sentence spoken out loud in one of four voices (in the free version). All of the voices are robotic, synthesized, and couldn’t pass for a real person in a million years. Had this been the ‘60s, maybe we’d see it happen. But as it stands, Voice Generator can’t fool anyone and it’s just about useless.

What you can use it for is tell something to someone if you’re mute and the other person is blind or doesn’t understand sign language. Other than that, we can’t think of any other purposes for this tool. Five-year-olds are probably better at coming up with uses for this one.

Tons of in-app purchases

To get other voices you need to pluck out some cash. There are four standard voices in the free version, all ten times worse than HAL 9000, while each additional voice costs $0.99 / €0.89 to download. Considering the low quality of the existing voices, there’s really no incentive to buy any extra ones.

The settings are pretty unreliable either. Despite promising to offer options for leveling out the volume, the speed, the pitch, and the variance, Voice Generator scrambles up these settings and you have to revert to default over and over again. Selecting a high pitch will result in no sound whatsoever.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7

Looks okay but the experience is hindered by the countless ads and nag screens. The layout is counterintuitive too.

Function5

You can use it if you’re mute and want to communicate something to a blind person. Or to just have a laugh. A very brief laugh.

Security8

It has built in sharing features so it’s not 100% local. But there don’t seem to be any security issues involved.

Battery9

Normal consumption levels.

Price4

There’s a price tag on almost all the purchasable voices, and there isn’t a single option to remove the pesky ads.

Compatibility7

Surprisingly, developer Pocket Books actually bothered to make this one a native app on all iDevices and still keep one of the lowest possible firmware requirement.

GOOD

Your 5 y/o kid will probably like it for a second or two.
