Togethera 2.8

Share photos, videos and updates with friends and family in a private setting
Facebook is a great social network, but it’s not exactly privacy’s best friend. Sure, there are plenty of features that you can fiddle with to protect yourself, but that’s not exactly the easiest thing to do for everyone.

Togethera is an app that seeks to bring something that’s not necessarily new to the table – private sharing. This doesn’t mean that you’ll be sharing your pictures with a single person, but rather with members of your family, only allowing them to see the content you see fit.

Private sharing

The app lets you share photos, videos and updates with your family, partner or close friends. You’ll have to specify exactly which group you want to share content with for every piece of data you upload to the mix, which makes things somewhat secure.

You can create as many groups as you want and invite them to use the platform, which can be done via text message, copy and paste of an URL and, ironically, Facebook Messenger. The invites contain a link allowing people to join your family so it’s best if you don’t share them freely on the Internet or the entire purpose of this app is lost.

While this is a sort of social network, Togethera doesn’t exactly qualify as such. It enables you to share photos of your kids, for instance, with your family, but there’s no friend requests, no followers, subscribers or content submitted publicly, which means search engines aren’t involved in this entire process.

Safe to use

This is, of course, great news since it means people’s data won’t be sold for advertising purposes. Which makes you wonder how exactly is this system sustainable… in the end, the devs say that while there’s no monthly fee or upfront payments, cash will be made in the future by allowing users to create printed photo albums or to subscribe to optional premium features, so at least there’s that to look forward to.

Now, this app is certainly nice and easy to use, and it’s certainly targeted towards those individuals that have gotten sick and tired of Facebook and the company’s rather shady privacy set-up. Even so, sharing content with only certain people, including personal pictures, is also possible to do on Facebook by creating those groups so few of us bother creating. Privacy can be amped up around all content, but you’ll have to fiddle with a lot of settings to do this, which is most likely the thing that bothers a lot of people.
