QR Reader for iPhone 5.0
Developed by TapMedia Ltd., QR Reader for iPhone is one of the more polished apps from this developer. It’s free for the most part, and it’s very useful indeed.
Two in one design
QR Reader for iPhone looks good and much more up-to-date than other utilities in TapMedia’s portfolio. The app doesn’t use skeuomorphic graphics, but it’s not completely flat either. Pretty ideal for people who like the best in both worlds.
The main UI is the camera view which uses the iSight rear-facing camera to scan for codes, and the Options menu is available to the left in a retractable pane. In the upper right corner you can select the localization.
Has its own browser, makes PDFs
Any code you scan immediately brings up either a note, a number, a description, a web site, an image, and pretty much anything that can be assigned one of these square, pixelated thingies. Want to make a PDF? No problem. Just snap some photos / scans with your camera and stitch them together into a nice PDF file which you can share, save, or do anything you want with.
The code creator lets you make your own QR codes for things like web sites, phone numbers, text, geo location, email address, contacts (meCard and vCard), SMS and events. You can use the app to browse deals & coupons, scan and make payments, receive payments, and more. It has an integrated web browser, but it would be nice to have an option to open links in Safari.
Most of the features are free to use indefinitely, as long as you don’t mind the ad banner at the bottom. There are two separate in-app purchases to make for removing ads and enabling a cloud package.
The tool received an updated navigation menu that makes getting to all the important areas of the app incredibly easy and intuitive. For instance, you can access the scanner, the history area, the QR code creator, or the settings area. You may even scan and share contacts, photos and videos, files, apps, songs or money.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
QR Reader for iPhone looks much better than other TapMedia apps, and we like the change in scenery |
Function8
Besides QR code scanning, the app has its own web browser, code creator, auto-detect feature, payment function, and PDF creator |
Security9
For such a well-connected app, the usual concerns apply (integration with different service, constant Internet connection, etc.). But there’s no reason not to consider it secure if used properly |
Battery7
You can expect some drainage if you scan codes on a regular basis. Keeping the camera on for too long is known to drain substantial amounts of power |
Price8
Two separate in-app purchases, one for removing ads, the other for enabling a cloud package |
Compatibility8
Requires iOS 5.1.1 as minimum firmware and supports only small-screen devices. iPad version is separate |
