Pimp My Keyboard 2.0.0
The app starts off with a prompt to download the full version. According to Cocopok, the full app installs the keyboards directly onto your device and removes all ads. We’re not sure that’s true, and we won’t pay them a dime just to find out.
Starts off with a scam
Pimp My Keyboard unfortunately is not to be trusted. It’s the kind of app that targets unwary customers who are naive enough to think that the “free app” ads are actually free apps. In reality, these ads are tricky gateways to scam sites where they ask for your phone number and charge you as much as $3 to $5 for a simple SMS. That’s the case with this one, and Apple had better remove it from iTunes.
It’s also worth noting that any app which advertises other things on launch should trigger alarm bells in your head.
Keyboard add-ons
The reality is Pimp My Keyboard does not actually replace your phone’s keyboard. Rather, it overlaps new designs on top of it, and this is obvious for two reasons: 1) the key placement and function are identical with each “new” design; and 2) the app struggles to keep up the pace with your fast typing, clearly indicating that it’s working double shifts.
The designs are admittedly nice, and it would actually be awesome if Apple allowed this type of customization via a simple app. Those still stuck on older firmwares know it best.
Sharing your message
To use these keyboards you must always launch Pimp My Keyboard. This means that if you want to send a message via Email or Message, you must launch this app, type in your message, hit Done, and select one of the two options at the bottom to have it sent. It’s really a drag.
What’s even more of a drag is trying to send a so-called “colorful” message via WhatsApp. It actually takes a screenshot of your customized message and sends it as an image to your recipient. You actually need to have it copied to your clipboard, launch WhatsApp, select the person you want to send it to, and finally hit send. Not exactly ideal.
If you really must use a different keyboard, be really careful about that scam. But we wouldn’t recommend it.

Bottom Line
Design / UI6
The design of Pimp My Keyboard is so-and-so, and some items on the screen aren’t even working. |
Function4
Responds slowly to touch and has very poor performance overall. |
Security1
This one is as bad as a virus infecting your computer. Apps with built-in scams shouldn’t even be allowed in the App Store. |
Battery7
Takes a fair amount of juice out of your iPhone. |
Price3
The price you pay for this one is in the ads, while the false marketing and built-in scam don’t help either. Bottom line, it’s anything but free. |
Compatibility6
Has an iPad version (in addition to iPhone and iPod touch), and requires iOS 8. |
If you must use a colorful keyboard, we suggest upgrading to iOS 8. It’s the safest and most natural way to get there.
