Opera Mini web browser 10.0.0

Browse the web on your terms and without taxing your cellular plan too much
Finding a web browser that suits your needs is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The App Store is packed to the rafters with them, and only some are able to offer a decent experience without overlooking anything vital.

Opera Mini is certainly one of those options. If you’re looking for a traditional web browser that doesn’t put too much emphasis on gestures and fancy, game-changing navigation, you’ve come to the right place.

For conservatory users

There’s a reason why Opera Software sells not one but two web browsers in the App Store. It wants to cover everyone’s needs, so for those of you who don’t like the gesture-based Coast browser, there’s always the good old fashioned Opera Mini. It looks like a regular web browser with a URL/search field at the top, interchangeable themes, options in every corner of the screen, and a tab view that makes perfect sense on smartphone screens.

Same as desktop, optimized for mobile

Opera launches to the Speed Dial home screen without any annoying prompts to sign in or tweak settings. In seconds, you’re able to browse the web hassle free and with the option to do so privately, if you want.

The Speed Dial holds your most-viewed sites but starts off with some suggestions from the Norwegian company to get you going. Here, you’ll also find your saved pages for offline reading, and folders for grouped sites that fall in a specific category of your liking.

You’ll find all the usual browser perks - find in page, bookmark, search suggestions - as well as some unique features. Such as: QR code scanning, a very handy scrubber on top of the keyboard that lets you correct spelling without using the annoying magnifying glass method, data savings for cellular browsing, and a Discover feature that always surprises you with hot stories from categories designated by you (Gaming, Lifestyle, Science, Sports, etc.).

The mobile browser allows you to open links inside it from other apps, which is particularly useful and a feature that should have actually been around for ages. The clipboard the app comes with is even more useful thanks to a recent update as you can easily search for content inside of it an open URLs stored in there with just one tap.

One feature that had been missing, which, in turn, annoyed users to no end was the zooming and text wrap capabilities. Well, the folks over at Opera thought better of it and reintroduced them to the mix, much to everyone’s happiness.

Videos have also received a boost from Opera. More specifically, the new upgrade they’ve brought to the mix allows you to watch more video on your iPhone by rescuing clips from stalling, reducing buffering and keeping your data plan in check. Opera has always been great at limiting your data consumption, so it’s great news that the feature extends to videos, too.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • cellular data savings
  • traditional, no-nonsense browsing on your mobile device
  • private browsing options
  • interchangeable themes
  • no prompts to sign in, log into social networks, etc

misses

  • User is left to discover how to access History and Discover (require swiping)
  • Discover feature sometimes doesn’t take the selected categories into account
Bottom Line
Design / UI9

Opera is a no-nonsense browser that gives Chrome (and other competing solutions) a good run for their money. The themes are a very nice touch, and the tab view is one of the best we’ve seen so far.

Function9

All of the above is enough to convince everyone to at least give it a test run. There’s a lot more in there, of course.

Security9

The anonymous browsing feature is a huge plus (granted, most browsers today have one), and since you’re not forced to log into anything, your web surfing feels private. The sharing feature doesn’t even include social networks.

Battery10

Opera Mini is very energy efficient. In fact, it’s the least power-hungry browser we’ve come across. It will draw more power from your device if you watch video or browse big image galleries and such, but that’s normal for any web surfing tool.

Price10

Free, with no ads, no logins, or partnering web sites. You just download the thing and start surfing the web without restrictions, hidden fees or prompts for donations.

Compatibility9

Optimized for iOS 7 and supported by all the iDevices that can take the firmware. Scrolling is smooth on the newest hardware, while some old devices (like iPhone 4) may incur choppy scrolling. But that’s not necessarily Opera’s fault. iPads are native
