Taking great photographs with your phone isn’t that much of a difficult job when we’re talking about iPhones. While the image quality in itself can be great – the colors are just right, the sharpness is there and the lighting is acceptable, there is much to be done if you’re looking for professional-grade results.

Moment App is a tool that was built by the folks from Moment, who are raising money through a Kickstarter to produce an iPhone case for mobile photography that comes with a built-in lens and shutter button.

The app itself seeks to accompany the case, although it’s in no way mandatory to have the gadget attached to your phone. Moment App will work either way and it will seek to help you out during the photo taking part.

A better camera app

When launching the tool, you’ll notice that it’s a replacement for the camera tool. The focus is on what you can see beyond the phone, while the buttons arranged beneath should help you take better pictures. For instance, the left-most feature lets you set a countdown timer for three or ten seconds, while from the Settings area you can adjust how many shots you want the app to take when timed shots are enabled, picking between one, three or six.

It’s also possible to enable the app to save pictures to the high quality TIFF format by tapping a simple button on the main screen. It’s further possible to enable the flash and to add a grid to the screen.

Focus and lighting

Additional features come out to play when you tap on the screen. For instance, you can tap your finger on the screen to set the focus to the place you want, while sliding up and down will allow you to adjust the focus of the camera, going from regular to macro easily. Sliding the finger left and right controls the lighting of the photo.

The app comes with another twist. There are assignments you can perform. It’s not just that various folks will tell you to take a picture of a sunrise, for instance, but you’ll find enough information to take a great picture as the experts guide you through it all, telling you what equipment you need, how to find the best spot to take a picture, how to frame it all, how to balance the exposure and so on. It won’t turn you into a professional photographer by any means, but you’ll definitely know more than you did before.
