Losing your phone is a terrifying thought. It’s not just about how much the device cost, although that’s certainly a considerate when we’re talking about iPhones, but more about the contents of the device – phone numbers, emails, countless apps and so on. Sure, everything can be recovered, since most data is backed up to the cloud somewhere these days, but it would be a definitive inconvenience to have to go through it all, recovering everything step by step.

As a rule, iPhones are pretty safe from thieves, especially if you set up a password and configured Touch ID, so anyone grabbing your purse or swiping your phone from your pocket on public transport won’t have much use for it without your Apple ID password.

Find your device

There are cases, however, when an app such as Find My iPhone will do a lot of good to have installed. As the name suggests, the app can be used to track the location of your phone on a map. Not only will your phone be instantly safer, but so will your iPad, iPod touch or Mac, which will all appear on a map.

All you have to do is set up the app on the device and sign in to the iCloud to keep track of its position. You can, of course, see all this on the phone too, but if it’s lost that won’t be of much good.

Other actions are available too. If you notice the device is somewhere near you, but can’t figure out where, you can remotely play a sound on the device, which will last for a couple of minutes. This will work regardless if the phone has been set to Silent mode, so there’s no hiding. If your phone was stolen this will also likely point out the culprit if they’re around you or drive them mad if they’re not close by.

Enable Lost Mode

It’s also possible to enable Lost Mode or lock a device. Once this mode is launched, you’ll need your phone’s passcode to unlock the device. If you want, you may also remotely erase the contents of your device.

All in all, this is an app that will help you make your iDevice even safer. The app was developed by the folks over at Apple so it’s all in the system and you won’t be sharing any kind of info outside the mother ship.
