When it comes to news sources, everyone’s heard of CNN. While the news television channel has had its ups and downs over the years, it has remained one of the best known names in the business.

Its site ranks number 69 globally and 26 in the United States, according to the Alexa popularity chart, a clear hint towards the trust people put in this source. The CNN iOS app is a simpler way to get access to all the news articles coming from this site, compared to using your mobile web browser to search for information.

Notifications and location

As you launch the app, you’ll get prompted to enable notifications so that you can get informed about the latest updates. You may also read the Terms of Service and Privacy Police, but since you probably never do this for any other service you use, chances are you won’t be doing it for this app either.

On top of the notifications, the app will also use your location to provide you with a customized experience, including by providing you with weather data. Tapping on the icons at the top will result in quick access to the local temperature highs and lows, and a ten day forecast. The button right next to the weather lets you check for any live events the folks over at CNN may be streaming.

If you enable the CNN Widget in your Today screen, you’ll be able to get the latest headlines without even having to unlock your phone.

Clear categories

The CNN app delivers news from a series of categories. The home page of the app will display the hottest topics of the day, as well as the weather data I was talking about. When it comes to news categories, the CNN app is pretty well structured. For instance, you can pick featured stories, news about CNN heroes, money, world sports, entertainment, tech and travel. Additionally, you can read articles about things happening in the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East. Articles can be saved for later reading or shared with whomever you want.

It’s also pretty easy to get access to recent videos from the CNN broadcasts or to shows by accessing the same menu (after tapping the hamburger button).Talking of which, these will automatically be watched in landscape mode. There are a few options for playing the videos, including a share button and another that provides you quick access to related content.

The Settings area allows you to toggle your news preference between US and International, to change your location and to fiddle with the temperature display. You can also enable the “This Is CNN” jingle to play every time you launch the app which is just plain annoying.
