Barcode Reader for iPhone 2.1
UI tries a bit too much
An iOS 4-style app, Barcode Reader for iPhone is like most TapMedia apps: thick, outdated, but still capable of delivering on its promise. Much of the UI revolves around scanning, but it also has a built-in browser (a very primitive one, might we add), while the tabs at the bottom serve for storing and accessing favorites, looking stuff up via search, and various options. The scanning animation is cute, but it’s non-removable.
Scan, search, find related products
Using the app is as simple as pointing it at any barcode and waiting for something to pop on the screen. If the app seems to fail to read the code, simply tap on the screen to focus the lens on the barcode. Sooner or later it will find something. It even scans QR codes, despite being dubbed Barcode Reader.
The results are displayed from 1000's of websites at once, and you can tap to reveal what interests you the most, even compare products between them. You can navigate as far as to the buy button if you’re interested in acquiring the product online.
You can favorite some of the results to store them and use them later, and you can view your stored bare codes along with their designated products in list or grid views. Despite being marketed as ad-supported, we didn’t encounter any ads.
Overall, it does a pretty good job at scanning bar codes and revealing their designated products. It displays hundreds, sometimes thousands of results with the ability to open the product page in the built-in browser, compare prices, and even buy.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
Barcode Scanner looks outdated, but not to a degree that we’d consider giving it a very low score. It fits snuggly on iOS 6 and lower firmwares, and only looks ancient on iOS 7 |
Function8
Does a good job at scanning bar codes and revealing their respective products |
Security8
Like most apps that can give away your habits, it should include a passcode lock just in case |
Battery7
Normal drainage levels for an app that uses the iPhone’s camera. However, if you leave it on it will stay on forever (doesn’t go into sleep mode, for one reason or another) |
Price9
It’s free to use and doesn’t display ads very often. You can use it in free mode without too much hassle. The IAP is for removing the ads. |
Compatibility8
It works with iOS 5 and newer firmwares and supports small-screen devices. The iPad version is separate |
A pretty decent barcode scanner that could use a facelift
