rad.io 2.14.8

Listen to multiple radio stations from all around the world
There are many apps that play radio stations out there, but only a few are truly useful. Some sport multiple features and tools to get you really confused, while others come with a more simplistic interface that's appealing to all kinds of users. rad.io falls into the second category.

Simplistic interface with only a few features

The app launches with the home screen, filled with recommendations of stations, a history of your experience within the app, local stations and more. However, the only settings that you can make to the app are to the buffer size. There are no additional themes or instructions of use. The app comes with banner ads and all tools are neatly arranged at the top of the screen.

Listen to all sorts of stations from around the world

The app is designed to give you recommendations of stations to listen to, but you'll need to register to an account to do that. There's also a top 100 index, a section that arranges stations based on genre, topic, country, city or even language. You can also listen to a wide variety of podcasts.

Tap on the star at the bottom of the screen and you'll be able to add a station to your list of favorites. Listen to stations located near you or use the search bar, but it doesn't come with auto-fill suggestions. The app keeps a history of all the stations that you've listened to and can be set to find stations near your location.

Some shortcomings

There's a home screen widget that you can use whenever you wish to pause a station, but the app doesn't offer a feature for the lock screen. There's detailed information on playing stations, together with the option of sharing it with friends on various social networks or setting up an alarm so you'd wake up to the sound of your favorite station in the morning.

A shortcut lets you access amazon to buy tracks, but the app isn't well synchronized with playing songs. Other than that, it doesn't seem to have any problems with audio quality, of course depending on your internet connection.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8

The interface is actually simplistic, making it perfect for users who aren't very familiar with Android apps.

Function8

No stability issues, but the app doesn't do much to differentiate itself from other radio applications.

Security9

It needs online registration in order to provide recommendations and accesses only those areas of your phone that it really needs.

Battery5

It has the potential of draining your battery, so keep your phone plugged in.

Price8

Banner ads are featured at the bottom of the screen and there's a paid version that doesn't come with ads.

Compatibility8

In order to work the app should be installed on phones and tablets running Android version 2.3 or later.

Editor's Review
VERY GOOD

A simplistic radio app that fails to stand out among others.
